The worldwide known and dazzling town (At 5 minutes from Camping Padimadour)
This sacred town is built in layers of houses and chapels against the cliff. From the castle that dominates this remarkable construction, a steep rock-face of 150 metres throws itself in the deep where it sources the Alzou stream. On the way to Santiago de Compostella, after climbing the 216 steps of the pilgrim stairs, you’ll find the Saint-Sauveur basilic and the sepulchre of Saint-Amadour, both listed as World Heritage by UNESCO. In the Notre Dame chapel, one of the 7 chapels built in the rocks, the Black Madonna is being honoured since more than one thousand years. Without a doubt, Rocamadour is blessed by the gods.
Every year, at the end of September, Rocamadour organises the ‘Montgolfiades’.
During two days of events in the Dordogne valley, about thirty hot-air balloons are released from the Alzou canyon, with view on the medieval town of Rocamadour…

The ‘Grotte des Merveilles’ is a shallow, small and prehistorical cave Rocamadour, offering various crystal concretions and wall paintings of more than 20.000 years old. Thanks to these wall paintings, the cave has been a historical monument since 1925.
